Due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19, the American Advertising Awards competition rules, categories and entry procedures for 2021-2022 have been modified to allow for the possibility of remote online judging.

In some categories, entrants are allowed and/or required to upload additional digital examples of an entry. This is intended to provide more appropriate content for the judges, should a virtual judging solution be necessary. For most categories, there has been no change from prior competition years.

Please carefully follow all online submission guidelines provided within the entry system, in order to ensure that your work is properly represented during all three tiers of the American Advertising Awards competition.

The American Advertising Awards, home of the ADDY® Award, is one of the industry's largest creative competitions, attracting nearly 30,000 professional and student entries each year through competitions offered through local AAF clubs. The mission of the American Advertising Awards is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in advertising.

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local Ad Club phase is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across the country, local entrants vie to win ADDY Awards - recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local ADDY winners compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions. District ADDY winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards. Entry in your local Ad Club competition is the first step toward winning a national ADDY.

NEW INFO 2/8/21:  Because we've been told some of our BULK Call-for-Entry emails have not made it through to all potential entrants until this week, we have move the PROFESSIONAL ON-TIME DEADLINE BACK to Monday 2/8 to now Friday 2/12/2021 at 6pm.  There will be no Late Fee associated with entries submitted before this Friday at 6pm.

The AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS competition is now back and we thank you for participating with your entry.

We have held entry prices from 2020 even with 2021 AAF National fees increasing.  We want it to be easy to grow your portfolio, not harder.  Again this year, all Hampton Roads AAF, AIGA and AMA members will be able to participate at FULL MEMBER DISCOUNT STATUS if you have a current paid membership with one of the local clubs.  Being a member of any one of these clubs will be treated as you would if you are an AAF member with AAFHRVA.  We want you to be an AAF member but more than that we want you to participate locally with your neighbors to be an active participant in the local ad community.

While you'll find lots of club membership and Silver Medal info at our MAIN WEBSITE AAFHRVA.org, you'll also find local AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS specific info and prior ADDY-winning creative from past years at our "Addy History" site AAFHR.org.  Visit both sites in your free time.

    • Single Entry - $100
    • Campaign (2-4 Related Creative Entries) - $115
  • Non-Hampton Roads Ad Club Members:
    • Single Entry - $130
    • Campaign (2-4 Related Creative Entries) - $145
  • Late Entry (After 6pm 2/9/21 thru 6pm 2/12/21) (2/12 at 6pm thru 2/13 at 6pm):
    • Single or Campaign - $160 each (no discount for memberships)

Students - Now through 2/12/21 @6pm (There is no late entry period for Students)

Because of the need to SOCIAL DISTANCE at time when infections are the highest point ever since March of 2020, we request you upload all creative for all categories DIGITALLY.

If you feel a physical copy is needed to show your work, you can have it submitted ADDITIONALLY via mail to:

Also ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL copies submitted will only be considered for the Hampton Roads/Richmond competition.  They will not be forwarded to REGIONAL or NATIONAL competition should you win in our local competition.

The 2021 Awards Gala

Just as COVID-19 prevented a 2020 Gala at this point we will not schedule a 2021 AWARDS GALA until it's deemed safe by the medical community to congregate.  We expect to offer a 2020-2021 Combined AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS & SILVER MEDAL event in Q4 of 2021 but will announce plans after June of 2021 when we have a better grasp on the safety of planning such an event.


Let's take some tangible steps to "getting back to normal".  Create and compete by entering the AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS.  Choose to grow your reputation with actions that support the hard work you provide.  Simply competing is winning in 2021.  If you win in this competition, it still means something special locally, regionally and nationally.  Winning 10 years ago, is not winning today.  Choose to compete and show how vital the work you provide is to your clients and their customers.
